Cybernetic Apocalypse - by James Livermore ========================================== Featuring:- * Incredible new weapons! ========= * Amazing new enemies, with a new look! * New deathmatch features! * And more! (Got your attention?) Introduction ============ 5 days ago, a single soldier entered Quake's vast dimensions, and tried to bring it all down by himself. He failed. HQ, recognizing that the stealthy approach employed by this soldier was correct, decided to send in another. You. The secret research programmes underway for several years have culminated in the creation of new weapons, which covert specialists have placed throughout the huge dimensions. The base that first experienced the wrath of Quake's armies has been the site of a raging battle for the past few days, between Earth forces and those of Quake. However, since yesterday, strange things have been happening. An Earth soldier shot what he thought was an ogre, and the body was recovered later. What was found shocked everyone. The creature was only half ogre. The other half was robotic material grafted on by some hellish technology devised by Quake. Later that day, a squad of men was wiped out by a powerful enemy helicopter. Most terrifying of all, a huge robot was sighted in the base, dubbed 'the Guardian'. A team of intelligence experts tapped into an ancient computer in one of Quake's dimensions, and discovered Quake's evil plan: to send his cybernetic armies over the world and initiate an apocalypse, destroying our world and taking the few surviving humans to be cybernetically altered to serve Quake! Earth's armies could not fight against such an onslaught. Everything depends on you. HOW TO INSTALL THIS PATCH ========================= 1. Make a folder/directory in Quake. Call it 'cyber' or whatever you want. 2. Copy this zip file into the new folder/directory. 3. Unzip it. 4. Run Quake with the command line 'quake -game cyber' (or the name of the folder/directory) THE NEW ENEMIES =============== The Cyborg ========== These are ogres which have been cybernetically enhanced by Quake. They are armed with rocket launchers capable of firing three shots quickly before reloading. Total killing machines: watch out for them. The Attack Chopper ================== These are light, computer-controlled combat helicopters, with deadly rockets. Quake replaced Scrags with these things, which are undoubtedly more deadly. The one weakness they have is their light armour. The Armed Guard =============== These are humans which have not been changed by Quake. They are a step up from Enforcers, with thicker armour, although they look the same. They are armed with a heavy duty military chaingun which can tear enemies apart very quickly. Deadly, particularly in groups. They replace Knights. The Guardian ============ These are the biggest, toughest enemies you will encounter. They are enormous robots, based on the design of the Shambler, capable of tranferring huge voltages through their hands or clawing their enemies to death. They are completely bullet proof, damagable only by explosions and sharp weapons such as the Morning Star. Even after their death, they have one last go at taking revenge... THE CHANGED ENEMIES =================== The Shalrath (Vore) =================== These have been given a large health boost. And they're called shalraths now. The Fiend ========= They have also been given a large health boost. The Grunt ========= They now wear an armoured combat suit, making them tougher. THE WEAPONS =========== 1: The Morning Star =================== The well known Morning Star is the first weapon in your arsenal. Press and hold fire to throw the spiked ball. If it hits something, it locks on to it and pulls you towards it. If it hits an enemy of any kind (including another player), it will not only pull you towards it, but also the spikes will injured the enemy. 2: The Two Double Barrelled Shotguns ==================================== Same double barrelled shotgun, except now you have two! 3: The Gas Grenade Launcher =========================== This weapon fires like a standard grenade launcher, but the gas grenade does not explode on hitting an enemy. Two and a half seconds after firing, the gas is released. Colourless and odourless, this deadly acidic gas attacks all that it comes in contact with. As time goes on, the gas cloud expands in size and destructive power, until the grenade finally self-destructs after 6 seconds in a small and harmless explosion. A gas grenade costs 3 cells. 4: The Fireball Bomb Launcher ============================= This weapon fires a rocket, which travels forward quite slowly for a couple of seconds. Then it turns into a fireball and blasts upwards. The fireball spawns 20 others, which rain down on anything below for a second, before blowing up. The intense heat creates a number of flames (see below) which can cause further killing. A great overkill weapon, costing 10 rockets per shot. 5: The Assault Chaingun ======================= This is the super nailgun's big brother. Deals out death at extreme speed, and looks cool. 3 nails per shot. * 6: The Nuclear Grenade Launcher =============================== Maximum overkill strikes, with this amazing weapon. It fires a nuclear fireball at high speed (slightly injuring anyone it touches). After 10 seconds, it implodes, creating a localized nuclear blast which will do incredibly large amounts of damage to anyone nearby, killing practically everything within an enormous range. 20 rockets per shot for as much destruction as money can buy. 7: The Laser Blaster ==================== This weapon uses an electrical field to produce a very powerful electromagnetically confined laser beam, which explodes on impact. The energy is such that some escapes in the form of a reactive solid, which blows up after a short time. More destruction, for only 2 rockets per shot. 8: The Thunderbolt ================== Also more powerful, now costs 2 cells per shot. Extra 1: The Firebomb Launcher (impulse 31) =========================================== This fires a firebomb, which explodes into a number of flames (see below) shortly after launch. The flames are capable of serious damage. Uses 5 rockets per shot. You get this with the Gas Grenade Launcher. Extra 2: The Deceiver (impulse 32) ================================== An amazing weapon. The Deceiver uses an advanced and highly complex system of hypnosis to convince enemies that you are their leader, and that your enemies are theirs! It fires a small blue device, using 3 cells, that locks on to an opponent for a fraction of a second, as it attempts to use electrical impulses to interfere with a creature's mind. The number of cells of electricity it then requires is directly proportional to the enemy's power. The weapon sends the device as many cells as it needs. If you do not have enough cells, deception cannot be completed, and all of your remaining cells will be taken in the attempt. Humans have too advanced brains to be deceived. If you try to deceive a human (a Grunt, Enforcer or Armed Guard), the device will realise, and no more cells will be transferred. This technology is not very reliable. There is always a chance that the deceiver will fail, in which case, the device will quickly detect the failure and only a few cells will be transferred. If you shoot a deceived enemy, natural instinct will take over and it will attack you back. Extra 3: The Sniper's Rifle (impulse 50) ======================================== The choice weapon of the sniper, this can quickly and efficiently dispose of enemies. While outwardly appearing like a traditional rifle, instead of bullets it incorporates the latest plasma field technology. It fires a small globe of accelerated plasma, which bursts on impact, burning the target with hot plasma. It does an amazing 800 points of damage to a target, which means that everything except for the Guardian can be killed in one shot! The plasma is hot enough to ignite the skin of the dead victim, producing a flame. It uses 12 cells per shot. Extra 4: The Black Hole Bomb Launcher (impulse 30) ================================================== This is it. The ultimate Quake weapon ever. The Black Hole Bomb utilises the most advanced weapons technology ever. The Black Hole Bomb Launcher fires a slow moving rocket, which will stop if it touches anything. Eight seconds after firing, it creates a microscopic singularity within the casing. This has a powerful enough gravity field to suck in anything at any distance inexorably towards the centre. Any enemy (or player) sucked in will be annihilated instantly. No bodies, no mess, just death. Even items and flames are sucked in, although neither of them can be destroyed (the flames because they are plasma, the items because they employ shielding - as does Shub Niggurath). Uses 30 cells, but it's well worth it. OTHER FEATURES ============== Flames ====== Flames are produced by various things (see above). They are caused by either hot or cool plasma. Those made by hot plasma (such as the sniper's rifle) will last forever, as they are so hot. Those made by cool plasma (such as the firebomb) will go out after a while. Touching a flame will cause a very large health loss. ChaseCam and Laser Spotlight ============================ I have added a chase camera viewpoint and laser sighting / spotlight. These work by using impulse 100 for the chase viewpoint, impulse 101 for the laser spotlight and impulse 102 for the laser sight. Multiskins ========== A number of player skins have been put in this patch. Use impulse 250 to cycle forwards through them, impulse 251 to cycle backwards. Suicide Bombs ============= If you have 10 or less health, you can use a suicide bomb to kill yourself and anything around you, at any distance. Impulse 70. Decoys ====== There is a decoy, which, when fired, looks like either a weapon, a backpack or a powerup. Touching one causes it to explode, good for multiplayer deathmatch games. Each one costs 3 rockets. Also, a stage up from this, the most powerful decoy device EVER... the NUCLEAR decoy! Exploding in the same way as the nuclear grenade, this decoy, which costs 30 rockets, works like the standard decoy, but is much more powerful. Type impulse 81 for a standard decoy, impulse 82 for a nuclear decoy. Pentagram of Protection ======================= When you get a Pentagram of protection, you are not only made invincible, you are also given the Sword of Death. Swinging this sword uses ancient fire runes to create blasts of deadly fire, without ammo consumption! However, the weapon lasts only while you have the Pentagram (which lasts for 1 minute, not 30 seconds). There is a cheat to get this weapon: impulse 232. Others ====== There are 2 new cheat commands (impulse 200 and impulse 201). The first gives you the keycards, the second, the weapons and ammo. Typing Impulse 35 will now cause a laser blast to be fired, no matter which weapon is currently selected. This costs 3 rockets instead of the usual two. LEGAL STUFF =========== The distribution of this patch is allowed AS LONG as it is done without charging money to the recipient, and that it contains all the files supplied, including this file, without modification. Walnut Creek CDROM and its affiliates have this permission. Umm.... sorry, didn't mean to sound uptight! ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ================ Thanks to:- "Mike", James Lazarus, Robert Miller, Christopher Bolin, Rob Albin, and the makers of those great multiskins. And to anyone I left out. (Please note, none of the above are affiliated with this patch, in fact they don't know me, but their own patches offered me material to help this production). COMMENTS ======== "The best Quake patch ever"- PC GAMER November 1997 "Astounding"- PC Zone December 1997 Only joking. Email me with your comments / suggestions / hatred at: james_livermore@hotmail.com. If anyone has a decent level editor, please email it to me, I'd appreciate it, I need levels. I realise Quake 2 is about to come out, please don't buy it straight away, save £30 and play my patch instead! This will probably be my last Quake patch, I hope Quake 2 will support a programming language. Bye people! James Livermore, 26/11/97
